Historical Notes
Squirrel Hill Stands Against Gun Violence was founded in early 2019 by members of the Congregation Dor Hadash Social Action Committee, as a response to the October 27 attack. The organization is a program of Ceasefire Pennsylvania. Squirrel Hill Stands Against Gun Violence primarily advocates for legislation aimed at reducing gun violence. In addition to its legislative work, the organization has held many public memorial and educational events throughout the Pittsburgh area. In early May 2019, Squirrel Hill Stands Against Gun Violence held a welcome reception for Team 26, a group of cyclists who came together following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. in 2012. Team 26 rides annually from Newtown to Washington D.C. to advocate for legislation aimed at preventing gun violence. As a gesture of solidarity, the group rode 625 miles from Newtown to the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh bringing seeds from Columbine High School and a garden tool made from guns acquired through a buyback program in Connecticut.
