The Collection

The October 27 Archive currently contains 176 objects and is regularly being expanded with more material. The archive includes flyers and programs from community gatherings held since the October 27 attack, a comprehensive collection of news coverage about the day of the event, oral history recordings reflecting a diverse array of experiences, and historical documentation about the Jewish experience in Western Pennsylvania.

Historical Notes

Squirrel Hill Stands Against Gun Violence was founded in early 2019 by members of the Congregation Dor Hadash Social Action Committee, as a response to the October 27 attack. The organization is a program of Ceasefire Pennsylvania. Squirrel Hill Stands Against Gun Violence primarily advocates for legislation aimed at reducing gun violence. In addition to its legislative work, the organization has held many public memorial and educational events throughout the Pittsburgh area. "Looking Back, Marching Forward" was a memorial event held six months after the October 27 attack. Attendees gathered at Temple Sinai in Squirrel Hill to hear from local religious leaders, activists and legislators and then marched to nearby Schenley Park to plant a tree in memory of the victims.
