She had early exposure to Jewish people and customs in Harrisburg, where her family worked for a religiously observant Jewish family with a catering business. Although she was raised in the Hill District neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Baton attended schools in Squirrel Hill from an early age and lived in the neighborhood starting in the 1970s. In her oral history, she describes the vibrancy of Squirrel Hill, as well as the nuances of the racism she experienced, especially as a Black student at Taylor Allderdice High School following the unrest of the late 1960s.

In her oral history, Baton provides insights into the organization and implementation of two large public events following the October 27 attack: a community gathering at the intersection of Murray and Forbes avenues on the evening of the attack, and “Pittsburgh Loves All Our Neighbors” on the day President Donald J. Trump visited Squirrel Hill. She discusses how these events allowed non-Jewish people in Pittsburgh to express their grief over the October 27 attack while still allowing the Jewish community to lead response efforts. She compares these efforts to those following the murder of Antwon Rose II earlier in 2018.

Baton discusses the changing relationships between different racial and ethnic groups in Pittsburgh, especially between the Jewish and Black populations in the city but also between White people of various ethnic backgrounds. She discusses the importance of former cultural organizations in the city such as the Ozanam Strings and the Selma Burke Art Center in fostering those relationships, as well as the importance of working environments as diverse as steel mills and domestic labor. She analyzes the structural similarities between racism and antisemitism in Pittsburgh and she considers the accusations of antisemitism made against the Women's March both before and after the October 27 attack. She discusses the significance of her Catholic upbringing and her current Mennonite faith in her life.

          Claire Moclock Thu, 09/01/2022 - 14:20

  Thu, 01 Sep 2022 14:20:05 +0000 Claire Moclock 237 at https://october27archive.org
