She attended East Hills Elementary School, Winchester-Thurston School, and Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts high school. She studied theater at New York University and linguistic anthropology at Temple University in Philadelphia before returning to Pittsburgh in the 2010s. Following the October 27 attack, she returned to Philadelphia to attend the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College. At the time of her oral history, she was living in the Bloomfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh.

In her oral history, Coufal discusses the experience of growing up in Squirrel Hill in the 1990s. She describes the warm, small-town feeling of working at a local dry cleaners, playing neighborhood-wide kickball games, and attending services at Dor Hadash. She also contrasts her experience in the predominantly White neighborhood of Squirrel Hill with her experiences attending East Hills Elementary School in East Hills, PA. and volunteering at the Center for Life Church in the Hazelwood neighborhood of the city, which were both located in predominantly Black neighborhoods. She also discusses the experience of attending Winchester-Thurston School and participating in the life-cycle events of Jewish friends. She recalls her young adult years after returning from college, when she would sneak into Afro-Caribbean dance nights at the Shadow Lounge and AVA Lounge in East Liberty. She describes the vibrant community-oriented, multiracial, and multiclass scene of these venues and laments their closing.

Coufal discusses her experiences on October 27. She describes her activities on the day of the attack and her increasing communal responsibilities with Dor Hadash in the years that followed. She traces an arc from her collegiate years, through the October 27 and into the COVID-19 pandemic, explaining how her need for Jewish peers contributed to her involvement with the congregation. She spends a considerable portion of her oral history analyzing the current state of antisemitism and articulating her frustrations with the various responses to it, both within and outside the Jewish community. She reflects on the challenge of finding a balance between political advocacy and communal stability in the aftermath of a violent attack like October 27.

          Claire Moclock Wed, 09/21/2022 - 16:24

  Wed, 21 Sep 2022 16:24:49 +0000 Claire Moclock 252 at https://october27archive.org Rosalind Chow https://october27archive.org/profiles/rosalind-chow Rosalind Chow

Rosalind Chow is a professor of Organizational Behavior at Carnegie Mellon University and was director of its Executive Leadership Academy at the time of the October 27 attack.

Chow earned a degree in Psychology at Columbia University in 2002 and a PhD in Organizational Behavior from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business in 2008. In her oral history, she describes the experience of coming from a different socio-economic background than many of her classmates. She describes the experience of being in a gifted and talented program consisting largely of Jewish and Asian-American students, and she contrasts her social life in the school with her social life online through dial-up bulletin board systems during the early days of the Internet. She describes Pittsburgh as a wholesome community but also analyzes some of the challenges she has faced in trying to be fully accepted in a city where many people have deep roots and multigenerational friendships. Throughout her oral history, she discusses the importance of a close friendship she and her husband share with an older local Jewish couple and the ways this relationship has brought her and her husband into the local Jewish community.

In her role at CMU, Chow has been involved in several programs designed to improve diversity and inclusion among executives in Pittsburgh. She spends much of her oral history discussing the creation and execution of an executive leadership program at CMU for local Black executives. She discusses the differences between mentorship and sponsorship and considers the ways people can use their social capital to help others feel more included. In considering the challenges she felt as an Asian-American woman leading a program for Black leaders, she discusses an emotionally vulnerable moment during one session, as well as the regret she felt later for not sufficiently acknowledging the experiences of the other participants in the program.

Chow learned about the October 27 attack through Reddit. In her oral history, she considers the impact of the attack on her understanding of antisemitism and wonders whether attacks against Asian-Americans will also rise should tensions between United States and China increase. She shares some of the considerations she and her husband have made as they prepare their children to enter the world with a combination of both White and Asian ancestry.

          Claire Moclock Wed, 09/21/2022 - 16:15

  Wed, 21 Sep 2022 16:15:31 +0000 Claire Moclock 251 at https://october27archive.org
