In his oral history, he discusses the positive experience of being a “distinct minority” in a small southern town, and he considers the impact of that experience on his decision to become a rabbi. After graduating from Washington University in St. Louis, Bisno received his rabbinic training at Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem and Cincinnati. In his oral history, he discusses his decision to remain in Jerusalem during the early days of the first Persian Gulf War. Following his ordination, he worked as the executive director of the University of Virginia Hillel and as an associate rabbi at a congregation in Philadelphia. He studied organizational dynamics at Penn, which he credits with helping him become senior rabbi of Rodef Shalom Congregation in 2003.

In his oral history, Bisno offers his thoughts on the challenges and opportunities facing legacy Jewish organizations in the 21st century. Faced with declining membership, he proposes a collaborative model where congregations each focus on providing specific lifecycle services.

Bisno provides an account of his activities on October 27, 2018, as well as the role Rodef Shalom Congregation played in the aftermath of the attack. Rodef Shalom hosted several funerals for victims of the attack and became the long-term home of two of the three displaced congregations—Tree of Life Congregation and Congregation Dor Hadash. Bisno describes the experience of being locked down during morning services, as well as the importance of being joined that morning by Christian clergy. He describes feeling gratification at the way he, his institution, and other people and institutions met the challenge of responding to the attack.

In his oral history, Bisno considers the cause of the October 27 attack. He describes the October 27 attack as the result of coarsening public dialogue, as well as easy access to firearms and a sense of cultural humiliation felt by certain White Christian men in America. He also considers the appropriateness of increased security at Jewish buildings following the attack, which provides congregants with a sense of security but also requires considerable resources.

          Claire Moclock Thu, 09/01/2022 - 14:22

  Thu, 01 Sep 2022 14:22:29 +0000 Claire Moclock 239 at https://october27archive.org
