The Collection

The October 27 Archive currently contains 1579 objects and is regularly being expanded with more material. The archive includes flyers and programs from community gatherings held since the October 27 attack, a comprehensive collection of news coverage about the day of the event, oral history recordings reflecting a diverse array of experiences, and historical documentation about the Jewish experience in Western Pennsylvania.

Hallmark card from a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Londonderry, New Hampshire. The envelope contains the following handwritten message: "Peace and Comfort." The front cover reads: "LOVE." The inside reads: "Dear Family in God, There are not any adequate words to express the horror of what happened to you in your synagogue. May the love of God and those near and far begin to heal the hurt of your losses. Our heartfelt love and prayers are with you in fellowship. Peace and comfort to you.

The Church at Severn Run card (16)

Note from a member of The Church at Severn Run in Severn, Maryland. The note is enclosed in an envelope with church letterhead, reading: "The Church at Severn Run: Love Well, Live Jesus, Believe Big!" The note inside reads: The church's contact information is included on the back of the envelope. "Our hearts are burdened by what happened in Pittsburgh. We know that we serve the same G-d and the G-d of the Old and New Testaments does not call us to violence each other. We pray for healing in Pittsburgh, in synagogues throughout America and for love from all churches.

West Allegheny Middle School card (021)

Card from a student at West Allegheny Middle School in Imperial, Pa. The front features a hand-colored illustration of a bird feather with geometric motifs. The back contains a handwritten note, which reads: "I'm sorry for your loss and I know what it like to lose someone dear to you but it is ok they will always love you no matter where you or the[y] are. -Owen H." The stock signature: "From your friends at West Allegheny Middle School," appears upside down on the upper right.

"May Your Memories Bring You Comfort" card

Card addressed to Rabbi Jeffrey Myers and Tree of Life synagogue from members of an extended family living in Massillon, Oh. (two hour drive from Pittsburgh), as well as Portland, Or., Vancouver, Canada, and San Antonio, Tx. The senders extend their heartfelt sympathies to Rabbi Myers and the entire Tree of Life family. They appended a note on the back flap of the envelope specifying that they brought a stone from the Sea of Galilee.
